Phil tells his story of a kid growing up in ‘Steel City’ - Newcastle, NSW; his memories as a surfer in the early 1970s; living as a struggling actor and Cleo centerfold and later a writer, director and producer.

In 1978, he wrote, produced and starred in arguably Australia’s most successful independent film, ‘Summer City’ which unearthed a young Mel Gibson, Steve Bisley and John Jarratt.

Since that time he has made more than a dozen films starring notable Hollywood stars and captured a Masters World Surfing Championship along the way.

Jam packed with charming anecdotes from his career, From Steel City to Hollywood gives the reader a rare insight into the plights and successes of a living legend in the entertainment culture.

About Phil Avalon

Phil Avalon began his long and enviable career in entertainment by selling seats to his own puppet shows at age five.

After a stint as one of Australia’s most successful male models, Phil went on to a forge a successful career in writing and production , including producing Australia’s first telemovie ‘Double Dealer’ and later the acclaimed ‘Summer City’, the platform for budding Australian actors Mel Gibson, Steve Bisley and John Jarratt.

Since that time Phil has produced over a dozen films and won the World Masters Surf Champion title.
